About
Nest sweeps are an important component of environmental due diligence before vegetation clearing, tree removal, demolition, and other activities that may affect nesting birds. This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to conduct systematic nest sweep surveys, recognize potential nesting habitat, identify signs of nesting activity, and assess whether proposed work could affect active nests. Participants will learn relevant legislation and regulatory requirements, survey timing and techniques, nest identification, and how to interpret and document field observations. The course combines self-directed online learning with a full day of hands-on field training and practical assessment. Through real-world scenarios and applied exercises, participants will develop the ability to recognize nesting behaviour, assess potential disturbance risks, document findings, and determine appropriate responses when they encounter nests. Designed for environmental consultants, field biologists, construction and forestry personnel, and other professionals involved in vegetation management or project planning, the course emphasizes defensible field practices, informed decision-making, and effective communication of survey results. Participants who successfully complete the training and required assessments will receive a Certificate of Training.
